Day Four

June 6th

The Second Surgery

The vet performed Alita’s second surgery in the morning. He was extremely busy and I could not catch him as there were several farm calls he was having to make. I was very frustrated that I didn’t know what was going on. I felt helpless.

I didn’t actually speak to the vet until that afternoon when I went for my daily visit to see Alita. He told me that the second surgery wasn’t much better than the first however that was all they could do for now. She still had some fiberous material in her joint and we would have to clean and change her would every other day. It was going to take some dedication on our parts.

He told me she could go home the following day and that he would pack up enough supplies for me to do 2 weeks wroth of bandage changes. Also, SMZ tablets for infection and Bute for pain with the dosage to give her.

I went home and prepared a stall for her. She was used to having a 13 acre pasture to roam in however this 10' x 22' stall would be her home for quite some time. We put in several bags of sawdust, a hay bin full of hay, fresh water and a salt lick. Now we just waited for Alita.
