Our
New Home
Well we have been looking for a new place
to call home for sometime. Alita and her buddy Echo have been settling
in nicely and now it is time for the family to move in. We made it
official and moved in the day before Thanksgiving. It will be nice
having all the horses here with us and not having to pay to have them
all boarded. We will actually SAVE $ with them all here. I will be busy
a lot more of the day however it will be worth it.
Alita and
Echo have been doing well. They are sharing a 12x16 stall with a
big turnout area during the night. During the day after they eat they
are allowed to go into a larger turnout that is about 30x80. They are
both enjoying having some green grass to eat during the day along with
some costal hay 2x a day.
Alita is still
struggling without her brace. She needs it off however every few days for
24 hours so she doesn’t develop sores or raw skin patches. Her SMB boots
are getting worn as she wears them A LOT. I have e-mailed a few companies
about possibly donating a new pair for her as the extra weight of a foal
in it’s last trimester is beginning to wear heavily on her bad leg. We
also e-mailed a company about donating joint supplements for her.
Hopefully we will hear back from them.
The cards we
are selling featuring Alita and her friend Ginger are selling OK. I put
all the $ from each sale back into Alita’s fund. We are hoping that
December will have better sales.
We have been
putting Alita back on Bute when we have her brace off because that seems
to be the hardest for her. I am hoping with her having the little extra
roaming space that she will be able build up her bad leg a little more as
well as strengthen her good leg. I still worry that it will give out with
the added weight of the foal.
We are down to
8 weeks until her foaling date. Her feed is up and she is receiving Equine
Senior as about 80% of her grain intake. We were very fortunate as a
representative of Equine Senior in the region heard about Alita and made a
donation of several bags of Equine Senior to Alita’s fund. It was a VERY
welcomed site in the mail. We are trying to give Alita alfalfa however she
just won’t eat it. Mixed in her feed or just straight she doesn’t want
anything to do with it. A friend suggested alfalfa cubes so we will try
that next.
Starting next
week we will be bringing in more of the horses from Alita’s old herd. I
hope to have her breeding mate Aly Shea here by mid December. She hasn’t
seen Aly since the accident and I am sure she will be very grateful to see
her again. She really loves Echo however you can tell she is almost
looking for someone else. Hopefully Aly is whom she
