Alita's
Story

Weeks
Twenty Nine & Thirty
December
16st - December 28th
Christmas Is Here!
We are 4 weeks away from Alita’s foaling
date at the end of the month. She is still adding on weight but not too
much and she is enjoying the company of her friend Aly. At night they
share a 12x16 foaling stall which opens into a large pen. Alita and Aly
take turns watching over each other as they lay in the hay I put in the
stall each night. There is also a light in the stall that can be seen
from our bedroom so I can keep watch all night.
Alita is
still getting turned out although I let her go out for 3 days in a row
and put her up at night. Well after the 3 days she was VERY sore and I
decided to leave her in for a few days. Aly wan’t the happiest staying
in the whole time with her however I know that Alita appreciated it.
Alita is laying
down again once after breakfast and then again after dinner through most
of the night. Turnout is down to 2 x a week and when she is out she really
feels good. She tries to forget about her leg however it is hard for her
with the others running with no pain and full range of motion. She is
learning to live with what she has and is so happy to feel like a horse
again.
We moved the
last of the mares just before Christmas. They were very happy to be
re-united with the rest of the herd. Daughters called to their mothers and
the Alpha mare called to let all know she had returned. Alita was the
Alpha mare before the accident however she has given up her rank to
another. She still tosses her head and all the herd respects her so she
will always have some higher rank with the band.
We are trying
to set-up a therapy session for the beginning of January. We were going to
try before New Years however it is still a little to hectic around here
right now. The lady, her name is Lynn F, said the session will take
approx. 1 hour and she is doing it free for Alita. I am going to watch and
she will teach me what to do as well to help Alita and make it more
comfortable for her.
Since we have
the new place and I know of several local people that are keeping track of
Alita’s progress I am going to invite others to come to the session as
well. With Lynn’s approval of course. It will be a way to let people see
Alita again and also see where we are now.
There is also a
photographer that read Alita’s story and she is interested in coming to do
a photo shoot of her. I can’t wait for her to meet Alita as she is such a
special mare. Still so regal, proud, loving and majestic with all life has
dealt her. Even with her bad leg she tries so hard and is determined to
beat this. If not beat it, she is determined to not let it get her down.
Her feed is
still the same. 1 part 14% grain, 1 part alfalfa pellets added with 2
parts of Equine Senior Also she still gets 1 cup oil at night. She eats
all of her 8 pounds per feeding. After dinner she then joins Aly for the
evening and every 3 days she enjoys being turned out in the front pasture.
We did not
receive a response to any of our requests for donations of boots as well
as supplements. Hopefully we will hear something after New Years.
